The mood is turning against the DA’s so-called multiparty coalitions in the Western Cape as more people become disillusioned with the DA’s “kragdadigheid” (power) tactics.

This shift is now also clear in Oudtshoorn where two councillors of the ID has sided against the DA-led coalition.

The two ID councillors, newly elected mayor Gordon April and Jurie Harmse, has broken with the ID last week and joined the ANC to eject the DA footmen from their leadership positions in council.

There is a clear shift away from the DA towards the ANC in the province. Especially in the small Karoo municipalities people see power mongering DA leaders building little empires and not giving attention to the needs of the poor.

While ID leader Patricia de Lille keenly ran to DA leader Helen Zille with a ring in the hand to marry their two parties, that marriage does not have grassroots support in the ID. The supporters in that party rather choose the ANC than to be swallowed by the DA. It is only De Lille that needs a marriage to extent her personal political future.

Voters know a vote for the ID has become a vote for the DA, as the ID has become a lackey of the DA bosses. The ID has already surrendered to the DA in recent by-elections. This trend is observed not just in Oudtshoorn, but in a number of municipalities.

People are choosing an alternative political home as the smaller parties associated with the DA starts to break up. The DA sucked out some of these smaller parties and hoped their supporters will gravitate to the DA.

This is not so. The general mood is that people realise the DA is failing them. They now see the truth and reality. This moves them to rather support the ANC as the only party that can oppose DA power grabs.

The DA coalition is breaking up and as more cracks develop people choose the ANC. The DA resorts to political kragdadigheid to fight all sorts of political battles, use its power to axe councillors for all sort of reasons or to dissolve a council like that of the Overberg District Municipality.

In Cape Town the DA ‘bought’ ID ward councillors to resign, just to turn up as DA candidates in the ensuing by-election - effectively handing those wards on a platter to the DA. The DA is out to destroy other parties just to entrench the position and perks of its leaders. The ANC will work for a better life for all of the people of the province.
