The Van Reede Drummie team achieved 1st place in the Non-prop, double flag, pom-pom and mace group sections at the SWD Drum Majorette Association's Competition on Saturday, 21 August. The team also came 1st overall in the small drill section, taking 1st place for mace leader (Jonelle Philander), sub-leaders, squad and display elements. Later this month the team will participate in the SA National Championship in Cape Town. The team captain is Laska de Witt. Linda Wilson, assisted by Avi van Antwerpen, trains the team. Both Laska and Jonelle have been chosen to represent the Western Cape Drum Majorette Team at Nationals this year. Jonelle also received her Protea colours for drummies in December last year and will participate as part of the SA Team in America early in 2011. At the Greater Oudtshoorn Sports Awards in December, the team was selected as the primary school sport team of the year and Linda Wilson as the primary school sport trainer of the year.
